  • Details supplied by Alexander Macfarlane:-
An interesting Affidavit RE the Will of John Rippington of Culverton.
The Will was being read to his sons Joseph and William, when 'William forcibly tore the 2 sheets of paper and run out of the room' later destroying them.
William had been left 4s 6d weekly for life, his three children, Mary, Elizabeth and John, were each to receive £100 on reaching 21, and all the freehold and copyhold estate was left to Joseph.
In Joseph's Will in 1786 he leaves all the goods, stock and lease of Culverton Farm to his wife, Celia, but seems to have healed the rift with his brother William; as he leaves him all the freehold and copyhold estate, and in addition leaves £100 to William's fourth child, Sarah.
[Notes: £100 in 1781 is worth about £10,000 in 2012.
4s 6d  in 1781 is worth about £22 in 2012, £300 based upon average earnings.
