Notes

  • Name: Joseph Rippington
    Year of Registration: 1863
    Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
    District: Amersham
    County: Buckinghamshire
    Volume: 3a
    Page: 261
  • Norwich Mercury Oct 18 1834:
"Joseph Rippington, aged 51, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a chicken from the premises of Hambleton Thomas Custance Esq, and was sentenced to two months imprisonment.
The prisoner was a stranger, and was about begging."
Norfolk Quarter Sessions record Michaelmas 1834:
Joseph Rippington pleaded guilty to larceny and was to be imprisoned in Norwich Castle for two calendar months.
  • The following is purely circumstantial and based upon guesswork derived from what details are presently known.
Joseph's birth is not registered anywhere, but on both census' he's listed as being born in Princes Risborough around 1781/1782 (on his death certificate he's 81 in 1863).
Based upon parental naming continuity it's most likely that his Father was Joseph (b. 1752), who firstly married Nanney Stathams and then after her premature death, Celia Town(e) on 10th Jul 1780. Being born after this date Celia is presumably his Mother.
Joseph senior died on February 29, 1786 and in his will he left his farm; Culverton to his wife Celia, and his estate to his brother William, plus £100 to his 5 year old niece Sarah (who'd missed out in a previous will from her grandfather John).
There's no mention of 4 year old Joseph junior in this will, but it could be that his Mother would've been expected to provide for him - she did now own a farm!
It was only two years later on 4th Feb 1788 that Celia re-married to John Blackwell of Great Kimble.
[Although there are some records of the Blackwell family in Great Kimble and Monks Risborough at this time, there are also numerous other records for them associated with Wooburn and Great Marlow; where Joseph's family are known to have featured highly in later generations, these towns are notably associated with the paper making industry (Joseph's trade-to-be).]
By the 1841 census a Thomas Grace (b. 1777) is living at Culverton Farm and in 1851 he's listed as a 'Farmer of 555 Acres employing 21 Men'.
This Thomas is presumably related to the Thomas Grace detailed as one of the Executors for the will of William, and also a Mr. Grace who was involved in the auction of William's land.
Thomas Grace junior was the son of John & Lydia, baptised on Feb 20th 1778 ... just a few months before William's son John on 25th May 1778.
How Celia's farm legacy came to be owned by Thomas Grace is not yet known.
  • Norfolk Chronicle - Saturday 25 October 1834
