Notes

  • Christine was the illegitimate daughter of Celia Annie Rippington.
Christine took over running the Rippington family grocery shop in West Wycombe.
The 1901 census shows her at the shop with her Aunt Elizabeth.
It's possible from this census to work out the location of the shop in the village (see below).
The 1911 census shows her as head of the household with her Cousin Kate Celia Rippington (William's Daughter).
From 1907 until 1939 she was listed as shopkeeper in the village in the trade directories.
Christine was caretaking the shop for the Rippingtons, but after the world war she sold the shop, much to the annoyance of the family, who she didn't tell.
The shop is clearly visible in photos from c1900 - it's the shop with the jetting above the pavement.
As this frontage was not present when the shop was previously the 'Coach and Horses' Public House it may have been that Joseph Rippington added this feature ... it's purpose was to increase the importance of the house and provided a 'Solarium' (sunroom).
