Notes

  • Westminster in the 16th century:
The Anglican church of St. Margaret, Westminster Abbey is situated in the grounds of Westminster Abbey and is the parish church of the House of Commons. It is dedicated to Margaret of Antioch.
The present building of St. Margaret's Church was consecrated on 9 April 1523, rebuilding on the site of this third and last building started in 1482.
Westminster Palace stopped being a royal residence after a fire in 1512 and became the center of bureaucratic institutions; initially the Lords used to meet in Westminster Palace and then the Commons too after 1547.
The Court of Common Pleas, or Common Bench sat in Westminster Hall.
Henry VIII enacted the dissolution of Westminster monastery in 1540 and made the former abbey a cathedral, although the diocese was dissolved by 1550.
When Elizabeth I re-founded the Abbey as a collegiate church in 1560 she maintained its exemption from episcopal authority and made her new foundation a 'royal peculiar', subject to the authority of the Sovereign.
In 1563, a plague similar to influenza visited Westminster, and the inhabitants were compelled to perform quarantine.
At this time Westminster was separated from London by fields, a road ran along the shore or strand of the Thames.
The road name 'The Strand' still survives although the road has been moved inland.
