  • On Tuesday, February 18th 1941, Newmarket High Street witnessed terrible damage, 27 fatalities and numerous injuries when a German Dornier bomber dropped a stick of 10 bombs along the length of the street on the afternoon of a busy market day.
Jack was working in Whipps fishmongers in the high street when the bombs hit, one landed on the (fish) smokery in the back yard and failed to explode.
Another landed next door on Freeman Hardy's just on the other side of the entrance to Market Street, this exploded and completely destroyed the shop.
According to my Dad there was a small snooker hall on top of the shop, with its entrance on the side in Market Street - this was completely demolished with all inside.
My Dad, who was 12 at the time, was at the Newmarket Secondary Modern School in Exning Road and can remember seeing the smoke rising over the high street.
Afterwards Jack cycled home to Exning Road and re-counted to his family how he remembers everything falling down around him and all the dust rising.
