Notes

  • Register of Papist Estates:
Sir John Curson's estate at Waterperry.
    Oxfordshire Record Office ref CJ/V/81:
The Lord of the Manor of Waterperry at this time was Sir John Curson who was a Roman Catholic.
By an Act of Parliament in 1715, following the Jacobite Rebellion of that year, all Catholics had to provide details of their property to the Quarter Sessions.
From the register of Sir John Curson's estate, carried out sometime between 1715 and 1718, we see that "Sarah Rippington had a messuage and lands belonging thereto at the yearly rent of £32." She also "holds New Close at the yearly rent of £8".
Her husband Thomas had died in 1710 so the property was presumably held in her name.
